While the world and his wife pass opinions on Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, Mahomes himself is feeling confident and relaxed.

After February’s Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, many have questioned the Chiefs, with analysts running the gamut of opinions over the course of the offseason.

Some have declared the ‘dynasty’ over, while others have been bold enough to declare Mahomes as no longer the top quarterback in the NFL, with Bill Simmons in particular claiming his numbers have dropped over the course of the last few seasons.

Mahomes, though, has addressed his hopes for next season in a recent interview, and he sounds ready to be explosive again.

Patrick Mahomes is ‘pushing the ball downfield’, praises makeup of team

Speaking to Kay Adams on Up and Adams, Mahomes was bullish about the team’s talent, firstly, rating it the best roster the team has had in his time with the team.

“It’s been a lot of fun out here, it’s competition — offense, defense, special teams, they’ve been doing a great job. I think guys are hungry, and that breeds excellence. We have the talent to be the best team that we’ve had, but we’ve gotta go out and prove it,” Mahomes said.

Mahomes also shared his recent change in style over the course of the offseason, hinting at a return to the deep-ball style of years past.

“We’ve been pushing the ball, you know, pushing it down the field, into tight windows, giving guys chance to make plays, and that’s Coach [Andy] Reid’s doing, you know, and guys are making plays, Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, Travis [Kelce] is making plays over the middle, Noah Gray…it’s been exciting, and we’re going against one of the best defenses in the league, so if we can succeed here, we can succeed against anybody,” Mahomes continued.

The Chiefs are looking to nail a narrative about their offense, and change a trend in the league

This all feels quite pointed, particularly in the light of quotes about Mahomes’ lack of ‘explosive plays’ over the past few seasons, and some feelings that he is potentially working more within coach Andy Reid’s system than in years past.

The fact is, also, that Mahomes has the ability to push things down the field again; the playmakers he named in Rice and Worthy are maturing all the time, but also have speed that can’t be taught. If they can round out their games, it gives Mahomes a downfield threat he hasn’t had since Tyreek Hill departed town following Mahomes’ first Super Bowl.

What they will have to battle with, however, is the knowledge that the league has largely set up to counter them. The prevailing usage of two ‘deep’ safeties, both able to cover, largely came about by necessity of containing Mahomes, particularly early in his career. Teams now set up almost in a ‘Jordan Rules’ type fashion, where containing Mahomes and limiting the Chiefs’ explosive plays is more important than anything else.

Still, if there’s a combination that can overcome that, it’s likely Mahomes and Andy Reid. If Mahomes’ comments are any indication, look for fireworks from Arrowhead next season.
