Bobby Stroupe, the longtime trainer for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, was ready to throw hands after a local radio host took a shot at his client. Kevin Kietzman of KCMO called the QB “fat” on a recent episode of his podcast after seeing photos of Mahomes celebrating the Fourth of July.
Kietzman also claimed that Mahomes was an “embarrassment” and should be more motivated to stay in shape after the Chiefs lost in the Super Bowl. It was certainly a brutal criticism that perhaps went a bit over the line.
“Vacation photos are popping up of Patrick Mahomes, and he’s fat,” Kietzman said. “I’m gonna say it and I’m gonna tell you the truth. He’s an embarrassment. …Dude, you’re fat. Your belly would be fat at my pool hanging out with us 60-year-olds. Stop the fast food. Do a situp. Do something.”
Troupe caught wind of the comments and went on a since-deleted rant on X, formerly Twitter. He even appeared ready to meet face-to-face to hash things out if need be.
“Send me your location,” Stroupe reportedly said. “You obviously need attention. If you want to see what in shape is — go make it through a practice at (training camp) or run hurry up offense scrambling back to back to back plays. You don’t have a clue what it takes. It’s not a look, it’s performance.”
Stroupe certainly has a point and the comments from Kietzman are a bit strange considering Mahomes’ track record. He has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl wins in his career and played in five of the past six Super Bowls.
It is worth noting that Mahomes’ production last season did seem to take a bit of a hit. He posted the fewest yards (3,928) of any season in his career and tied for the fewest touchdowns (26).
Regardless, this is a six-time Pro Bowler and arguably the best quarterback in the league currently that we’re talking about. His fitness hasn’t been a problem for him in the past and it doesn’t seem likely that it will get in the way as the Chiefs chase another title next season.
Mahomes probably won’t change anything about his offseason approach based on the comments of one radio host. He and Stroupe have been working together since the QB was in the fourth grade, and the results speak for themselves.
