Patriots Super Bowl champion has strong reaction to Rams' trade for All-Pro DE Myles Garrett

Coming off a loss to the eventual Super Bowl-champion Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game, the Los Angeles Rams were already viewed as a team plenty capable of going one step further in 2026.

After all, 2025 league MVP Matthew Stafford is still under center on the NFL's best scoring offense (30 PPG) from last season, and the majority of the roster is still intact around him. As such, Monday's blockbuster trade for five-time first-team All-Pro and single-season sack record-holder Myles Garrett should make them the team to beat in 2026.

The Rams were one of the league's most complete teams last season, but the addition of Garrett is why former Super Bowl champion and current ESPN analyst Jason McCourty believes they are the best team in the NFL.

Jason McCourty offers strong take on Rams after massive Myles Garrett signing

"The Rams are absolutely the best team in the NFL," McCourty said on Tuesday's edition of "Get Up." "There's not an analyst that's gonna come on TV today and say anything opposite of that when you look at what they've done this offseason. What I've been so impressed about is, the last time the Rams did this, they traded for Stafford. They won the Super Bowl.

"After that, though, they were a 5-12 team. Everyone was talking about (Sean) McVay potentially going to TV. ... When you draft a guy like Puka Nacua in the later rounds, Kyren Williams, Byron Young. When you hit on those guys, it gives you the ability to make a trade like this."

For starters, this was a Rams team that was no stranger to making offseason moves even prior to the deal for Garrett on Monday. While they lost Pro Bowl edge-rusher Jared Verse as part of the deal, they previously traded for All-Pro Trent McDuffie and signed Jaylen Watson to a new deal.

They also retained key impactful players on the roster as well including safety Kam Curl, tight end Tyler Higbee, running back Ronnie Rivers and inside linebacker Grant Stuard, highlighting their "all-in" approach as they look to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in front of their home crowd when SoFi Stadium hosts Super Bowl LXI on Feb. 14, 2027.

This Rams offense has all the tools to make another run with Stafford, Williams, Nacua and Davante Adams. However, their defense gave up the 10th-fewest points per game (21.3 PPG) in 2025, so there is plenty reason to believe that unit will improve tremendously with Garrett's presence on the field.

Garrett equaled his career-high with 60 total tackles last season, in addition to his 23 sacks that broke former New York Giants pass-rusher Michael Strahan's single-season record (22.5 in 2001). For comparison, the Rams had 47 sacks as a team last season, another sign of the immense impact that Garrett can make.

While the trade for Garrett has led to rumors of defensive star Aaron Donald coming out of retirement and joining the stacked Rams unit, the addition of Garrett has already improved the Super Bowl outlook for the Rams next season with FanDuel giving them the best odds (+550) as of Tuesday.

It was easy to view the Rams as one of the league's top contenders coming out of the 2025 campaign. With Garrett joining the team and a lot of key returnees and offseason additions rounding out the mix, the rest of the league could be in trouble.
