Patriots’ Wide Receiver Depth Creates a Welcomed Dilemma
Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

After years of lackluster wide receiver play, the New England Patriots are heading into the 2025 season with the most depth the position has seen since the Tom Brady era.

But that abundance of talent creates pressure. Now, the Patriots must carefully evaluate their options and make the tough decision to let go of a player who may have significant potential.

An Overcrowded Room

NFL teams typically have six, occasionally seven, receivers on their active roster. With 12 wideouts entering training camp, the team faces a numbers game as several promising candidates are at risk of getting cut.

While the team wants to surround second-year quarterback Drake Maye with as much talent as possible, carrying a seventh receiver who doesn’t contribute meaningfully could hinder roster flexibility.

The front office can’t be too cautious with supporting Maye, but it leaves the group with tough decisions to make.

The Locks

Adding Stefon Diggs, a true No. 1 receiver, addresses a longstanding need. Despite concerns over his age and ability to recover from a torn ACL in October, Diggs fills the void of a go-to perimeter weapon.

His “down year” in 2023 still saw him amass 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns, while his 62 yards per game with Houston in 2024 outpaced any Patriot since Julian Edelman in 2019. With a fresh $63.5 million contract, his roster spot is as secure as it gets.

New England’s third-round draft selection, Kyle Williams, should also be an easy pick to make the roster. Along with the fact that they just invested valuable draft capital into him, his ability to create separation and win against man coverage brings a skillset that the Patriots have lacked. His presence, alongside Diggs, adds a promising young talent to the mix both for the short and long term.

Safe Bets

Demario Douglas is on the verge of being a lock.

He’s been the Patriots’ most consistent receiver over the past two seasons. He leads the team in receiving yards (1,182) and receptions (115) since joining the organization. His ability to work from the slot provides a clear path to playing time, though his 8% drop rate in 2024 (22nd in the NFL) is a concern.

Barring another team blowing the Patriots away with a trade offer, he will be back for 2025.

Mack Hollins, who signed a two-year, $8.4 million deal in the offseason, is another strong candidate. While his receiving numbers are modest, his versatility as a run blocker and special-teams contributor is valuable. Notably, his career-high receiving production came under Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels in 2022 with the Raiders.

Hollins may not be a primary target, but his ability to contribute along the margins likely secures his place.

On the Bubble

The competition intensifies beyond the four near-certain locks.

Kayshon Boutte, following a breakout sophomore season with 589 receiving yards and three touchdowns, is a notable candidate to return. However, rumors about him being on the trade block raise questions about his standing with the team.

Trading him could result in a greater return than some of the other receivers in the room, but it risks disrupting a developing connection between him and Maye.

Was that chemistry simply a result of the lack of alternative options, or was it the start of a strong relationship moving forward? The Patriots will have to heavily weigh their options with Boutte, who is the most interesting factor in the equation.

Second-year receivers Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, drafted in the second and fourth rounds of 2024, also face an uphill battle. Polk’s drop rate of 12.1% in his rookie year was the third-worst in the NFL, while Baker barely saw the field. Given Polk’s higher draft investment, he may have a slight edge, but both are far from guaranteed a spot. Training camp will be crucial for both players to prove they deserve the opportunity.

With three players in direct competition and only a couple of spots left, there is a strong possibility that one of these three could be on the move before the season begins.

Long Shots

Kendrick Bourne, once a reliable target with 925 yards and five touchdowns in 2021, has seen his production decline every year since. His reduced impact and limited upside for a young quarterback like Maye place him firmly on the outside looking in.

Efton Chism III, an undrafted free agent from Eastern Washington, is a name worth watching. The Patriots reportedly won a competitive bidding war to sign him, and ESPN’s Mike Reiss highlighted offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ track record of success with undersized receivers as a reason for optimism. Chism may begin on the practice squad, but his potential is worth monitoring.

A Good Problem to Have

While the Patriots may not boast one of the NFL’s elite receiving corps, their 2025 group is the deepest they’ve had in years. This depth offers quarterback Drake Maye a diverse set of targets, and while tough decisions loom, the Patriots are better positioned at receiver than they have been in a long time.

Report: Bengals draw hard line in Trey Hendrickson contract talks

Cincinnati Bengals star defensive end Trey Hendrickson has been holding out from training camp as he seeks a new contract, and it does not sound like the two sides are all that close to a deal. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said on "SportsCenter" Monday that there has been "some progress" in negotiations between the Bengals and Hendrickson's representatives over the past week or so. The real disagreement has to do with guaranteed money, and Cincinnati's brass is not budging. "Hendrickson wants a stronger guaranteed structure, particularly later in what should be a multiyear deal. In talking to people with the Bengals they feel like, 'Hey, we've probably relented as far as we can go.' So this is a classic stare-off right now, and it's time to buckle up," Fowler said, via Andrew Peters of Bleacher Report. Hendrickson is set to earn $16M in base salary in the final year of his contract this season. He recently said he has shown a willingness to take less than market value on a new deal, but the Bengals do not want to guarantee him money beyond the 2026 season. Based on what he has said, the 30-year-old Hendrickson is not seeking to become the highest-paid defensive player in football. In order to accomplish that, he would have to top the three-year, $123M extension T.J. Watt signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. Hendrickson had 35 sacks over the past two seasons, which was the most in the NFL during that span. He had 17.5 sacks each season and finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2024. The Bengals took care of one major offseason issue on Sunday when they finally signed first-round pick Shemar Stewart to a rookie deal. All it will take is one side to budge in the team's ongoing stalemate with Hendrickson, but all parties seem to be dug in as training camp rolls on.

Fever Coach Stephanie White Has Given One Player the Green Light Amid Caitlin Clark's Injury

Caitlin Clark is expected to sit out for a fourth straight game on Sunday when the Indiana Fever take on the Chicago Sky in a much-awaited rivalry matchup. The 23-year-old is still dealing with a reaggravated groin strain and has no timetable to return. The rest of her Fever teammates have had to step up in her absence. There is, perhaps, no other player who has taken a bigger role on the offensive end amid Clark’s injury spell than three-time All-Star Kelsey Mitchell. Mitchell, however, struggled with her shot in Thursday’s win against the Las Vegas Aces. The 5-foot-8 guard shot the ball poorly in the first three quarters, going just 4-of-19 from the field for 12 points. Mitchell caught fire in the fourth, though. She went 4-of-5 in the final frame for nine points, finishing with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-24 shooting. This is exactly why head coach Stephanie White remains completely confident in Mitchell’s scoring ability. The veteran coach has made it clear that she has given Mitchell the green light to shoot the rock. “The biggest thing with Kelsey is just telling her, ‘Let it fly.’ It’s going to go,” White said after Thursday’s win against Las Vegas. "... Keep shooting it from outside. She made some big ones when we needed them.” Kelsey Mitchell Has Stepped up Amid Clark's Injury Mitchell has answered the call for the Fever of late. In the three games Clark has been sidelined, Mitchell has put up averages of 22.0 points on 42.9% shooting. She also knocked down 2.7 triples during that stretch on a 34.8% clip. The 29-year-old veteran will need to keep her foot on the gas on Sunday as the Fever try to take down the Sky at United Center. With Clark watching from the bench, the Fever will rely on Mitchell’s scoring against Chicago as they look to improve on their 13-12 record. The Fever and Sky meet at 3 p.m. ET Sunday on ABC.

Ryan McMahon Only Needed 2 Games With the Yankees to Embarrass Aaron Boone

Only eight plate appearances into his New York Yankees career, Ryan McMahon has already been more productive than the team’s previous third base options. What might sound hyperbolic or outright false at first glance is actually true, at least from a certain point of view. Analytics — specifically, Wins Above Replacement — proves that argument, and it’s one that Yankees manager Aaron Boone should be ashamed of. McMahon went 2-for-3 with a two-run double in Sunday’s victory over the Phillies, giving him four hits in his first eight at-bats. FanGraphs ruled that McMahon is already worth 0.2 fWAR through two games in a Yankees uniform. Amazingly, McMahon has a higher fWAR than the trio of DJ LeMahieu, Oswald Peraza, and Jorbit Vivas, who have played a combined 148 games in the infield thus far. LeMahieu provided -0.1 fWAR over 45 games before being unceremoniously cut earlier this month, while Vivas (-0.2) is currently at Triple-A. Peraza and his -0.6 fWAR remain on the active roster, though he’s shifted into a bench role. Baseball-Reference has been slightly more generous, giving Peraza -0.2 bWAR. Boone stuck with LeMahieu and Peraza until he couldn’t anymore, and it’s partly why the Yankees have dropped to 5 1/2 games back in the AL East. Injuries and age took their toll on LeMahieu, who only played second after returning from calf and hip problems. Peraza owns a .152 average and .452 OPS in 170 plate appearances. We’ll see if McMahon can elevate the Yankees, who open a pivotal four-game set with the rival Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.

LA Lakers have inside track to sign 2x All-Star in new buyout deal, it would complete their roster

The Los Angeles Lakers could make yet another addition to their roster this offseason. After a poor postseason run, the Los Angeles Lakers have been active this summer in hopes of bolstering their roster. In fact, general manager Rob Pelinka has already made some key additions to the roster, including Deandre Ayton, Jake LaRavia, and Marcus Smart. Signing an elite center was arguably the most important task for Pelinka this offseason, and he fulfilled it with the arrival of Ayton. However, one could argue that the Lakers still need a quality backup center. Luka Doncic could recruit Nikola Vucevic to the Los Angeles Lakers While the Lakers re-signed Jaxson Hayes, a player of Chicago Bulls star Nikola Vucevic’s caliber would undoubtedly be a major upgrade. Moreover, with Vucevic being on the Lakers’ radar for years, it means that the organization rates him highly. Previously, the Bulls didn’t indulge in a trade with the Purple and Gold around Vucevic. It has led to Vucevic’s trade value diminishing so much that he is expected to complete a contract buyout with the Bulls. The Laker Nation would love to sign the 34-year-old, and Luka Doncic can help in this quest. How? Well, Doncic and Vucevic share the same agent in Bill Duffy. This means that if Vucevic completes a buyout, the Lakers could have the upper hand in negotiations. The 2x NBA All-Star has given the last five and a half seasons of his career to the Bulls, but it’s obvious that their time together is about to end sooner rather than later. Adding fuel to the fire were former Orlando Magic star Evan Fournier’s comments. Fournier ridiculed the Bulls while taking a shot at Vucevic after the latter called out his move overseas. Luka Doncic has already proven he can recruit stars Ahead of his first full season with the Lakers, Doncic is doing everything in his power to bring back the glory days for the Lakers. He has already undergone a massive transformation to silence his critics. Additionally, Doncic has been actively involved in recruiting players for the Lakers. Smart admitted Doncic was a huge reason behind his decision to sign with the Lakers. Ayton also acknowledged Luka’s role in his decision to join the Purple and Gold. Let’s not forget Ayton also has the same agent as the Slovenian superstar. So, Doncic has already given the inside track for one star; there’s no reason to doubt he would do the same in Vucevic’s case.
