The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in a similar situation once again while they wait on Aaron Rodgers. Steelers General Manager Omar Khan was direct when the 2026 offseason began, saying they did not anticipate Rodgers’ decision taking this long. Well, now Steelers fans are less than a week out from the draft and still have no clue who their starting quarterback will be for the 2026 season.
Many believe Rodgers will suit up again for the Black and Gold in the 2026 season; however, until he reveals his plans, no one knows with any certainty what the often-polarizing four-time league MVP is thinking at this stage in his career. Mike McCarthy has made it clear they like Will Howard a lot and are comfortable with Mason Rudolph, but not everyone is buying that.

The general consensus was that Rodgers would give an answer before the 2026 NFL Draft. With the draft quickly approaching on Thursday, NFL insider Tom Pelissero went on The Rich Eisen Show to deliver some unfortunate news to Steeler Nation regarding Rodgers’ timeline for making his decision.
"I have no anticipation Aaron Rodgers is going to announce anything prior to the draft," Pelissero said while chatting with Eisen on his show Friday. "I know that Art Rooney had indicated he hoped it would be around then. I've not been told that. I don't think that's really a deadline from the Steelers' perspective... now it is Rodgers, I know he does unexpected things at times. I would say him attending the NFL Draft is not high on Aaron Rodgers' bucket list."
That report only added more tension to an already uncertain situation in Pittsburgh. According to Pelissero, there is still no firm indication that Rodgers is close to finalizing anything, which leaves the Steelers in limbo as they continue to shape their offseason plan. The longer this drags on, the more complicated it becomes for a front office trying to balance patience with preparation, especially with a roster built to compete now.
Inside the building, the Steelers continue to project confidence publicly, but the waiting game is becoming harder to ignore. If Rodgers does not commit before the draft, Pittsburgh may be forced to seriously reconsider how they structure their quarterback room moving forward. At this stage, the uncertainty is no longer just a storyline. It is becoming the defining factor of their entire 2026 offseason strategy. However, many still assume Rodgers will end up playing for Pittsburgh in 2026.
The most important factor for the Steelers is that Rodgers makes his intentions known before Organized Team Activities kick off in mid-May. That window matters because it would give him valuable time on the field with teammates instead of stepping in blindly later in the offseason.
If Rodgers commits before OTAs, he would get real practice reps in Pittsburgh’s new system, building timing and chemistry with the new players. Without that, the Steelers are forced to plan as if he may not be part of the picture at all. Until a decision is made, the speculation will continue to dominate the conversation in Pittsburgh. The longer Rodgers waits, the more uncertainty hangs over the roster and the team’s entire offseason direction.
For the Steelers, everything now comes down to timing, and Rodgers’ decision before OTAs could ultimately shape the entire direction of their 2026 season.
