The Las Vegas Raiders have been getting unexpectedly bullied on the offensive line, and fans are clamoring for a solution.
For the sake of giving Geno Smith and Ashton Jeanty some room to breathe, the Raiders need to figure something out and quickly. The one answer everyone has converged on is moving Jackson Powers-Johnson back to center, which was a key transition to helping the offensive line last season. With not a lot of alternatives, it seems like a move that makes a lot of sense.
Unfortunately, that appears to not be the prevailing line of thought for the people ultimately making the decision.
When asked if he was even considering moving the offensive line back to a configuration similar to last season, Raiders head coach Pete Carroll shot down the idea quickly.
“Absolutely not, no,” Carroll said. “We’ve invested a lot of time with these guys playing in their spots. I know you’re interested in JPJ [Jackson Powers-Johnson]. This is an official week to practice and to get ready. Last week was not that. So, he’s ready to compete for the playing time, and he and Alex [Cappa] will be going at it. So, it’s a good situation in that regard.”

The Raiders have tried to make this current setup work, but Carroll cannot be surprised that questions are beginning to arise.
Even more questionable than keeping Powers-Johnson at guard is the fact that Carroll is still keeping the competition between him and Alex Cappa open. Powers-Johnson has only played one game (Week One against the New England Patriots), but that game was where the offensive line looked the best and coincided with the Raiders’ only win so far this season. Everything that happened since training camp has suggested a rift is forming between Powers-Johnson and the coaching staff, and this does not help squash any rumors.
Whether it is from the side of Powers-Johnson or the Raiders, this situation looks like it could come to a head at any point.
