The Los Angeles Chargers have spent the last two offseasons building the offense around their quarterback Justin Herbert.
Key additions in 2024 include wide receiver Ladd McConkey, center Bradley Bozeman, and tight end Will Dissly. This offseason, Herbert got more help with running backs Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton, as well as bringing back wide receiver Mike Williams and selecting Tre Harris in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
The resurgence of one of the Chargers' free agent signings should elevate the offense upfront, but doesn't appear to get the love the player deserves.
PFF writer Mason Cameron ranked the top 32 guards in the NFL. New Chargers guard Mekhi Becton was ranked 27th among guards despite earning high PFF grades a season ago.
"Becton’s shift to the interior during his lone season in Philadelphia breathed new life into his career. During the regular season, he posted a 75.3 PFF overall grade, sitting just outside the 20 highest-graded guards on the season. Now, the hope is that he can continue that progression with another new team, the Chargers, in 2025."
Becton was a former first round pick of the New York Jets in 2020. Injuries and inconsistent play only had him on the team for four years. Last year, he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles and revived his career from tackle to guard as he helped them win the Super Bowl.
PFF had Becton graded as the 19th-best run blocker among NFL guards with 74.7. He allowed three sacks in all of the 2024 season with the Eagles.
The Chargers made the decision to sign Becton in the offseason to a two-year, $20 million contract. Becton is expected to take over the right guard position.
Los Angeles's offensive line is already looking stellar going into this season with Becton joining Rashawn Slater, Joe Alt, Bradley Bozeman, and Zion Johnson. Last year's line allowed 44 sacks, ranking 14th in the NFL.
At 26, Becton appears to have turned his career around as he's got plenty of years to play on the field. As long as he can stay healthy, the Chargers have an impactful player on the line to keep Herbert upright.
