PFN: Possible Trade Suitors for Jalen Phillips

An ESPN article published on Wednesday stated that if/when the Miami Dolphins decide to start moving players, Jaelan Phillips will be one of the most sought-after players on their team, generating significant interest.

Phillips is a 2021 1st round draft pick who, before his two major injuries, was becoming a superstar edge rusher.

But he is playing on the final year of his contract, and he will be a free agent this offseason, and Miami won’t get anything in return for him if he leaves. Or at best a compensatory pick in two years, possibly.

Miami’s best option may be to take the bull by the horns and trade him now to add draft compensation next April.

Who Would Trade for Phillips

There is a new ProFootballNetwork article out listing three potential suitors who may have interest in Phillips should Miami look to move him.

Tampa Bay, San Francisco, and Dallas.

All three make sense for different reasons.

Let’s start with Dallas. They traded away Micha Parsons a few weeks back and need to replace that production.

If Jerry Jones feels his team is in the playoff hunt, he may want that edge rusher to come in and help out his defense.

And if he feels he can get Phillips, coming off two major injuries at a discount, then all the better in the eyes of Uncle Jerry.

I could totally see Dallas as a player for Phillips, especially if they run off a few wins here in the next few weeks.

Now, San Francisco has just lost their best edge rusher in Nick Bosa to an ACL injury.

How will they replace him?

Well, Jaelan Phillips is perhaps the answer.

The 49ers will be in the mix to win the NFC West, which means they may host a playoff game.

And if you host a playoff game, you have a chance to make a run and go to the Super Bowl.

Phillips would be an ideal replacement for Bosa, and if they want to re-sign him and keep him long term, he would be the perfect player to pair with Bosa for years to come.

The Tampa Bay possibility I find the most interesting.

Everyone thinks the NFC will come down to Philadelphia or Detroit.

Right or wrong, that is conventional thought right now out in the world.

I think, though, if there is a 3rd team to fight their way into that tier, it’s Tampa Bay.

And the Buccanners could use one more pass rusher to put them over the top, maybe, and be the missing piece on defense.

Tampa Bay should want Phillips the most out of these three teams listed.

Conclusion

I’m not sure if Phillips has a future here in Miami beyond this season.

He is coming off two significant injuries. The Dolphins drafted Chop Robinson last year in 2024, and with the Dolphins having salary cap issues, can they afford to pay Phillips what he will demand on the open market?

I don’t think they will be able to.

Meaning, trading him now in a lost season where the playoffs seem unlikely is probably the wise decision.
