Philadelphia Eagles Add 9-Year NFL Veteran To Secondary

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles are signing cornerback Kenny Moore II to their practice squad, NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported Tuesday. The Indianapolis Colts released Moore on May 7 at his request, and he went unsigned through the first two weeks of the regular season.

Moore made the Pro Bowl in 2021, when he had 4 interceptions, 13 passes defensed, and a career-high 102 tackles. He started 111 of the 132 games he played in nine seasons with Indianapolis.

Two days before Wolfe’s report, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the Detroit Lions were among multiple teams that had shown interest in Moore. Moore had not taken a visit with any team since his release.

Moore entered the NFL with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2017. New England waived him in final roster cuts on Sept. 2 of that year, and the Colts claimed him off waivers. He became a full-time starter in 2018.

In April, Moore and the Colts agreed to seek a trade. No deal came together, and Indianapolis released him May 7, clearing $7.06 million in cap space with $6.05 million in dead money. He had signed a three-year, $30 million extension in 2024 and had $9.49 million in non-guaranteed money left on it.

In 14 games last season, Moore had 55 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 6 passes defensed, and an interception he returned for a touchdown. His career totals with Indianapolis include 649 tackles, 21 interceptions, 68 passes defensed, 11.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, and 5 defensive touchdowns.

Moore had been a free agent for seven weeks when he appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio on June 25.

“I’m at the perfect point in my career where I really want to win, and hopefully that comes with a team that has the culture, the scheme set up for me,” Moore said. “I just don’t want to be a guy on the team, because I feel like I have so many strengths to give to the secondary or give to the team, and just be a leader.”

“But for me, I was putting down in my notes probably two days ago, whenever I was flying in,” Moore continued. “It’s more so, whatever role I have on a team, it’s more so like perfecting that role and not really, it’s less about me. I don’t talk about me. I want to talk about how I can be in a new place and serve. I want to serve not just the team, not just learning the plays, but I want to serve the community and continuing everything I was doing in Indy.”

Former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Stephon Gilmore, a five-time Pro Bowl selection who played for Indianapolis in 2022, posted on X on Aug. 27 asking how Moore was still unsigned. Gilmore wrote that Moore had “been the best nickel in the league for awhile now.”

Philadelphia Eagles Add Kenny Moore II, Zach Ertz To Practice Squad

Moore is the second veteran the Eagles have added to the practice squad this week. On Monday, they agreed to sign tight end Zach Ertz after Dallas Goedert sprained his MCL in Sunday’s 24-20 win at the Tennessee Titans. Ertz spent eight-plus seasons in Philadelphia.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni was the Colts’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2020, Moore’s second, third, and fourth seasons in Indianapolis.

Philadelphia is 2-0 and the only unbeaten team in the NFC East. The Eagles play the Chicago Bears on Monday at Soldier Field, with kickoff at 7:15 p.m. CT on ESPN and ABC.

The Cowboys visit Lincoln Financial Field on Monday, Oct. 26, with kickoff at 7:15 p.m. CT on ESPN. The Eagles play at AT&T Stadium on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. CT on FOX.
