Philadelphia Still Giving Mekhi Becton Cold Shoulder

The Philadelphia Eagles welcomed former standout tight end Zack Ertz back into the fold earlier this week. However, another former Eagle still remains on the outside looking in.

Mekhi Becton, a mammoth offensive lineman who started at right guard during Philadelphia’s 2024 run to the Super Bowl, remains unsigned. The free agent last played with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025 and has publicly stated he would welcome a phone call from Eagles general manager Howie Roseman.

This is happening at a time when the Eagles are facing uncertainty with their offensive line. Former starting center Cam Jurgens struggled in his new role at left guard, and new center Drew Kendall received a Pro Football Focus grade of 44.9 after his first NFL start in Tennessee, good for 30th among 32 qualified centers in the league. So why not see if Becton can dust off his Eagle uniform and help out one of his former teams?

First off, Becton’s time with the Chargers was brief, as well as rocky. Though he appeared in 15 games and made 14 starts last year, Becton dealt with hand and knee injuries, as well as a concussion in his lone season in Los Angeles. Becton also sustained numerous injuries earlier in his career as a member of the New York Jets, as well as in his lone season with Philadelphia.

Becton also publicly stated his frustration over playing time last year in Los Angeles, not a trait that will go over well with future employers inside the league.

Also consider that the Eagles’ blocking scheme is drastically different now as opposed to when Becton was last there. Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion runs a zone-blocking scheme that requires athletic and quick footed lineman. At 6-foot-7 and about 360 pounds with a lengthy injury history, will Becton be able to execute well in that scheme? It appears the Eagles front office has its doubts.

Becton may be an option later in the season if more injuries to the Eagles line pile up, but I think Philadelphia will continue to look in house for help in the trenches.
