I think I can safely assume that we've all had enough of the Chiefs. Right? They're so 2020, with their 'all-time great QB' and 'all-time great TE' and their 'all-time great coach.' It's all so trite. Where's the fun in being that good? Where's the thrill in winning every close game you play for 10 straight years? At this point, if they really want to impress everyone, they need some fresh, new adversity.
Obviously, it's hard to realistically conjure up such a gift this late in the offseason, so we turn to the most reliable hub of hypothetical offseason moves: Bleacher Report. The folks over at B/R took a look around the league and picked one player on each team that should, in theory, be traded before training camps start up in late July. What's especially fun about this specific exercise is that it finally gives the Chiefs the adversity we've all been waiting for.
"For a team that has utterly dominated the AFC over the past decade or so, the Kansas City Chiefs don’t have a roster with a lot of obvious trade candidates. The massive contracts handed out to the team’s stars have impacted the team’s depth—there just aren’t that many players the team can afford to part with ... Watson’s injury aside, he was excellent last season, allowing just 53.3 percent of the passes thrown in his direction to be completed with a passer rating against of just 75.4. Those numbers will get the attention of plenty of NFL teams."
Do it, KC. Trade one of your best cornerbacks; I dare you. Trade the guy who's appeared in 38 games over three seasons, the guy who Pro Football Focus had ranked 44th out of 222 eligible corners last season. That would teach the AFC West a lesson. Andy Reid is always playing chess while the rest of the league plays checkers, and what's more savvy than trading an up-and-coming cornerback who already has tons of experience?
This would be a dream come true for the Chargers. And if Watson wants to get revenge on the Chiefs twice a year by staying in the division, who am I to stop him? Being the NFL's modern dynasty is one thing, but let's see them do it without one of their best backup cornerbacks. Not so easy now, is it?
