According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Green Bay Packers plan on releasing cornerback Jaire Alexander on Monday. The Philadelphia Eagles have quickly emerged as a potential landing spot for the two-time Pro Bowler, but would it be a smart move?
Slay was a key piece of Philadelphia's 2024 defense that ranked first in the NFL in points allowed and yards per pass allowed, but he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being released earlier this offseason. Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson are set to battle it out for a starting cornerback spot opposite Quinyon Mitchell. If the Eagles don't feel confident in either player, Alexander would be a big upgrade to the CB2 spot.
Teams don't love to commit cap space to injury risks, and Alexander fits the bill in that regard. The 28-year-old missed at least 10 games in three of his last four seasons with the Packers. He did make the Pro Bowl in each of his last two healthy seasons in 2020 and 2022, but it's hard to trust him to stay on the field.
Some thoughts on the possibility of Eagles signing Jaire Alexander:

** He makes a ton of sense. Has been an elite player when healthy but injuries have been an issue. Probably undervalued right now. Screams Eagles player that comes to Philly and returns to form

C.J Gardner-Johnson played a pivotal role in the back end of Philadelphia's defense last year. The mischievous safety was good at getting under the opponent's skin with smack talk and physical play, but the Eagles' secondary is missing that element with CJGJ moving on to the Houston Texans.
Alexander is a famously confident cornerback who loves to irritate opposing wide receivers. It's always a bonus to have an enforcer in the secondary, and Alexander could fill that role nicely.
The Eagles take pride in their ability to develop young players—especially ones taken in the later rounds of the NFL draft—and give them an opportunity to start when their time comes. That's the case this year with Ringo, who's played well on special teams for two seasons but hasn't seen much time at cornerback. Philadelphia believes in Ringo's upside as a fourth-round pick out of Georgia, and this could be his chance to step up with Slay leaving town.
Signing Alexander would send Ringo back to the bench for another year, which could stunt his development and lead him to another team when his first contract runs out.
