Usually, when a young superstar receiver enters the final year of his rookie contract, team brass rushes to complete an extension, ensuring the partnership continues for years to come. The Seattle Seahawks did exactly that this offseason, extending Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Their division rivals, the Los Angeles Rams, have bucked the trend when it comes to their No. 1 wideout, Puka Nacua.

Nacua has yet to receive a contract extension three weeks before the regular-season opener. He has expressed his desire to remain in Los Angeles, but there has been no urgency from Rams brass to complete a deal.

Insider weighs in on Nacua’s future

The Athletic’s Nate Atkins weighed in on whether it’s only a matter of time before the Rams give the 25-year-old a contract extension.

“I think it’s a matter of time until Nacua lands a monstrous extension. I’m not quite at the point of predicting that will come from the Rams, but I know that’s definitely everyone’s hope.

“It’s an interesting situation because the cost on Nacua is likely to rise from here, given how the salary cap and superstar receiver market rises each year. The Rams know if they don’t pay Nacua, another team will, regardless of off-the-field concerns.”

This perspective aligns with what head coach Sean McVay said about the wide receiver during the NFL Annual League Meeting in March, praising his play on the field while emphasizing that a professional athlete’s responsibility extends beyond the white lines.

Nacua is coming off a dominant 2025, leading the league in receptions and finishing second behind Smith-Njigba in yards, while placing third in the AP Offensive Player of the Year voting behind San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey and Smith-Njigba.

Nacua faces an ongoing civil lawsuit from a New Year’s Eve incident, which the NFL is investigating. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the receiver could be suspended for the Week 1 game in Australia, but as of now, no decision has been made.

Nacua didn’t hold out during training camp. He showed up focused and sharp, a clear sign of growth. But until the contract is resolved, it will continue to be a hot topic across the NFL.
