The Las Vegas Raiders had the opportunity to send a message to the rest of the NFL in primetime on Monday night. However, unfortunately, things did not go the Raiders’ way, especially quarterback Geno Smith, who threw three interceptions in the 20-9 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Smith just wasn’t at his best, whether due to missing throws, poor reads, or pressure from the Chargers’ defense that sacked him three times on the night. Smith completed just 55.8 percent of his passes with no touchdowns to go along with those picks.

But the Raiders quarterback is not shying away from the criticism and is taking the loss as a leader should. After the game, Smith stressed the fact that he has to learn from this poor performance, adding that he will be very hard on himself and vowing to improve going forward, via Eduardo Raza of Heavy.com:

“I’ve got to learn from it,” Smith said. “You know what I mean? This game is all about learning from your experiences. This is a game—again, I’ve had similar games in the past where the ball has bounced in an unfortunate way, or decisions haven’t [been] the best on a given play, or the best throw. That’s a part of the game.

“But you can never just say you can flush it. You’ve got to learn from it. I’m going to be super hard on myself—extremely hard on myself—because that’s all I know. I’m going to get better this week; I’m going to find ways to get better from, and we’ll be better as a team as well.“

It wasn’t just Smith who struggled as the entire Raiders offense failed to get going against the Chargers. But as the quarterback, he understands it is his responsibility to lead this team, and he knows he didn’t do a good job of that on Monday night.

However, it is this accountability and leadership that have helped Smith turn his career around, and that is why the Raiders brought him in to lead this team. There is no doubt that he will put in the work to turn things around, and when your leader is committed in this way, the rest of the team will follow suit and put in that work as well.

NFL comments on Raiders minority owner Tom Brady’s appearance in coach’s booth

There has been some concern about a potential conflict of interest for Raiders minority owner Tom Brady, who is also a Fox Sports analyst. Brady was shown during the Monday night broadcast in the coach’s booth wearing a headset, which some questioned whether it should be allowed. The NFL has already released a statement on the situation.
