Raheem Morris has promising update on Jake Matthews

One of the few negatives from the Falcons win over the Bills on Monday Night Football was ironman left tackle Jake Matthews leaving the game just before halftime with an ankle injury, which he never returned from.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris didn’t have an immediate update for the media after the game, but he did say on Tuesday that Matthews is considered day-to-day, signaling he’s not going to miss much time, if any at all.

Jake Matthews doesn’t miss games. You have to go all the way back to Week 2 of 2014 — his rookie season — to find a game he didn’t play for the Falcons.

If the injury isn’t too serious, Matthews will do everything in his power to suit up for Sunday Night Football against the 49ers. However, it’s a short week, and he’s far too valuable to risk further injury by rushing back onto the field.

The Falcons are already thin at tackle, with Kaleb McGary and Storm Norton both sidelined — McGary already ruled out for the season. In Matthews’ place, Michael Jerrell filled in at left tackle for the second half against the Bills, and to say he left something to be desired would be putting it nicely.

If Matthews can’t go in Week 6, the Falcons will have to consider other options against a stout 49ers defense.
