Before the Las Vegas Raiders’ season opener against the New England Patriots, fans got to hear from someone they were not expecting to hear from so soon.
Former Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce now works as an analyst for CBS Sports, providing his takes on the happenings around the NFL. Of course, being a former part of the Raiders organization, Pierce would know a thing or two about the inner workings of the team.
Of course, that also means Pierce knows about some of the problems with his former employer, one of which he shared with the CBS panel on Sunday.
While on the air, Pierce said that the one thing that has doomed the Raiders in recent years has been their lack of consistency, which is directly correlated to their revolving door at head coach.
“How many different coaches have you gone through in the last five, six years?”@AntonioPierce says the Raiders need to be more consistent as a franchise

“[The Raiders need] consistency in that building,” Pierce said on CBS Sports. “Pete Carroll, Antonio Pierce, Josh McDaniels, Rich [Bisaccia], [Jon] Gruden — I mean, how many different coaches have you gone through in the last five or six years?
“At some point, you’ve got to find a coach that you like. You’ve got to like the culture, the accountability, the responsibility, and then the commitment. Everything with the Raiders is about commitment to excellence. Well, how do you have excellence? You need consistency.”
While Raiders fans might consider Pierce’s comments as sour grapes, he does make a valid argument here.
Granted, no one will go out of their way to defend Pierce’s lone year as full-time head coach, where the Raiders went on a ten-game losing streak and finished 4-13. However, firing a head coach and general manager after one year in charge tends to be a bad look for any franchise.
It is an issue the Raiders are hoping to correct this year with Pete Carroll, and Pierce does believe the veteran coach is capable of accomplishing that.
“Pete Carroll—the biggest deal with him is he’s been here and done that before,” Pierce continued. “He’s won everywhere he’s been: USC, the Seattle Seahawks. He brings in a culture. I think it’s no different than what I tried to do last year, right? You bring in that culture, you get guys excited, but you have to maintain it.”
Even if the Raiders fanbase might not appreciate the source, the team itself would be smart to at least take Pierce’s words into consideration.
