Having future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady on your side is an advantage Las Vegas Raiders QB Geno Smith is not taking lightly.
Smith had some battles with Brady during their NFL careers, but it wasn't long lived. Brady finished with a 4-1 advantage over Smith, but that is OK for the former West Virginia Mountaineer, who's now leading the Raiders while Brady serves as the team's minority owner.
"It's great to not have to compete against him anymore," Smith told NFL insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network reporter Omar Ruiz. "Just to have a guy like to lean on. I mean, this is the best of the best. When he speaks you listen. He's done a great job with this organization and so forth. He's really helping the quarterback; he's helping me out and he's a mentor."
Smith is in his first year as the Raiders quarterback after the franchise acquired him from the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent the past five seasons — four with current Raiders HC Pete Carroll. He was brought in to turn the Las Vegas around after finishing the 2024 season with a 4-13 record.
Smith is ready for the challenge, but is also getting pointers along the way from Brady, who was watching from the field Saturday during the Raiders' mock game at Allegiant Stadium.
Brady had a role in the Smith trade, according to The Athletic's Don Pompei. It is up to Smith to show his resurgence in Seattle wasn't a fluke. After all, the Raiders are starving for a winning season, something that hasn't happened since 2021.
Smith was a winning quarterback in Seattle with a 28-24 record, according to Pro Football Reference, and is being counted on to continue those winning ways in Las Vegas. With Carroll and Brady on his side, there is no reason why that cannot continue with the weapons he has and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.
