Raiders set to part ways with defensive starter

The turnover of the Las Vegas Raiders defense continues, with the team preparing to move on from another starter from last season.

On Sunday, Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that the Raiders are looking to trade cornerback Jack Jones. If a trade partner cannot be found by Monday, however, Jones will be released by the team.

Either way, Jones’s time with the Raiders is coming to an end.

A favorite of former head coach Antonio Pierce from their shared time at Arizona State University, Jones was claimed off of waivers by the Raiders from the New England Patriots in 2023. Jones performed well enough to earn a starting role last season, but he struggled to replicate the same success in 2024. With Pierce gone and a new regime stepping in, they clearly do not view Jones as a fit anymore with the new identity they are hoping to implement.

In fairness, the writing may have been on the wall for this move. The Raiders placed a heavy emphasis on their secondary during free agency, including signing Eric Stokes from the Green Bay Packers. While it is unlikely that these are the only moves the team makes on defense, the Raiders feel comfortable enough with Stokes and Jakorian Bennett to make this move.

Whether via trade or release, the Raiders save $3.4 million by moving on from Jones.

The clock is officially ticking on Jones in Las Vegas.
