Rams Make Franchise History in Win Over Ravens

Sean McVay has spent much of the last decade finding new ways to make Los Angeles Rams history, especially since he teamed up with veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford in 2021.

Sunday’s 17-3 victory not only kept McVay’s club in contention for its second straight NFC West title, but it marked the first time in over a decade that the Rams held an opponent to three points on the road. The Rams hadn’t done so since a 24-0 shutout over the Washington Redskins on Dec. 7, 2014.

However, what makes Sunday’s achievement so special is that it’s the first instance since the club’s 2016 relocation to Los Angeles. If you remember, the Rams still played in St. Louis during that 2014 victory.

Of course, the Rams previously played in Los Angeles from 1946 through 1994. They last held a team to three or fewer points on the road as the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 25, 1994, a 16-0 shutout of the Kansas City Chiefs.

“We were able to give them the three points, but that was just because of mistakes on our end,” Rams pass-rusher Jared Verse said. “I wasn’t filling the gaps. I wasn’t carrying on the back side. ... Everybody just wasn’t doing their job collectively. And then after that, we just got right in our positions.”

The Rams Dominated the Ravens in Week 6

Actually, saying that the Rams “dominated” the Ravens feels generous. Although the Ravens outgained the Rams 296-241, they only averaged 3.9 yards per play. Baltimore went 7-of-17 on third downs and an ugly 2-of-6 on fourth down.

In fairness to the injury-ravaged Ravens, they took the field without All-Pro quarterback Lamar Jackson. Backup Cooper Rush managed just 72 yards and an interception on 19 pass attempts before Tyler Huntley entered the game. Huntley finished 10-of-15 for 68 yards but took four sacks.

Rams linebacker Nate Landman totaled a franchise-record 17 tackles, including two crucial stops on a second-quarter goal-line stand.

“It’s a whole operation,” Landman said. “It’s not just me, it’s a team game. So shout out to those guys, [I’m] grateful for the opportunity to be in those positions. Just happy for the win.”

What’s Next for the Rams?

Sunday’s win moved the Rams to 4-2, putting them in a three-way tie with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks atop the NFC West. Although the Rams are the NFC’s No. 7 seed, NFL Media lists their playoff probability at 83%; only the No. 1-seeded Tampa Bay Buccaneers (89%) rank higher in the NFC.

Next up for the Rams is a trip to London and a showdown with the much-improved Jacksonville Jaguars. FanDuel Sportsbook lists the Rams as -3 favorites (-105, meaning that a $100 bet would result in a $195.24 payout) as of Monday afternoon.
