The Los Angeles Rams anticipate a key boost to their offense on Sunday, as head coach Sean McVay made clear that wide receiver Tutu Atwell is on track to return against the Carolina Panthers. After missing four straight games with a hamstring injury, Atwell will have his 21-day practice window opened this week, and McVay said the speedy wideout appears to be “ready to roll.”
Atwell’s absence has stretched back to October 19, but the Rams believe his return comes at the perfect time. Even in limited action this season, the former second-round pick reminded the league of his explosive playmaking. His 88-yard touchdown against the Colts in Week 4 remains the longest passing play in the NFL this year, and two of his other three receptions also went for more than 30 yards. His production has been low-volume but undeniably high-impact.

McVay previously hinted Atwell would return when first eligible, and barring a setback, he’ll slide back into his complementary role behind Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. Even if the Rams ease him in with a partial snap count, his field-stretching ability brings a dimension the offense has lacked in recent weeks.
Jordan Whittington, Xavier Smith, and Konata Mumpfield have filled in admirably during Atwell’s absence, helping stabilize the receiver rotation. Tight end Terrance Ferguson has also emerged as the teams top deep threat in thier three TE sets, which have increased dramatically during Atwell’s absence.
But Atwell’s ability to flip the field in a single snap is unique—his 41.0 yards per reception this season shows just how targeted his usage has become in 2025.
While Atwell is nearing his return, fellow injured Ram Ahkello Witherspoon remains further out. McVay said the team is “getting close” to opening his practice window but doesn’t want to start the 21-day clock before he’s physically ready. December remains the targeted return for the veteran cornerback.
For now, the Rams will gladly take one reinforcement. With Atwell expected back and the offense regaining a true downfield weapon, Los Angeles enters Sunday with another layer of explosiveness—just in time for a crucial stretch of the season.
