Rams QB Jared Goff out for Cardinals game after thumb surgery?

It appears the thumb injury suffered by Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff during Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks is as bad as feared.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported early Monday evening that Goff underwent surgery to repair the broken thumb on his throwing hand and likely won't play in the regular-season finale against the Arizona Cardinals at SoFi Stadium.

Former Alliance of American Football signal-caller John Wolford, who has never appeared in an NFL game, is in line to start in place of Goff.

The Rams were already set to be shorthanded on offense, as running backs Darrell Henderson and Cam Akers are both carrying high ankle sprains. If neither can play against Arizona, veteran Malcolm Brown is next on the depth chart at the position.

Brown has accumulated 399 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 98 carries this season.

The Rams fell to 9-6 on Sunday but still hold their playoff fate in their hands and will clinch a postseason berth with a victory over Arizona. Additionally, the Rams can earn a playoff spot if the Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears in Week 17.

It's hoped Goff would be able to return for the playoffs.
