Rams' Tackle Faces NFL Punishment Decision After 49ers Loss

McVay and his staff have plenty to clean up before Week 2. But the fallout from this loss might not stop with the offense. Starting left tackle Alaric Jackson could end up paying for it, too, and not just on the scoreboard.

With 12:05 left in the fourth quarter, Stafford found tight end Colby Parkinson on a short pass down the middle before 49ers linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw brought him down at the Rams’ 36-yard line. The play never counted, though.

Jackson was flagged for a chop block on Ogbo Okoronkwo, an illegal high-low block where one blocker hits a defender high while a teammate cuts him low. San Francisco accepted the penalty, and Los Angeles lost 13 yards along with the completion.

Jackson now faces a punishment decision from the NFL. Rule 12, Section 2, Article 5 of the 2026 NFL rulebook classifies the chop block as a personal foul, and the league office will review the play before deciding whether to fine the veteran tackle.

Per the NFL’s 2026 fines and appeals schedule, a first-offense chop block penalty carries a fine of $12,537, and Jackson now waits on the league’s official Week 1 announcement.

The Rams will look to regroup in Week 2, hosting John Harbaugh and the New York Giants, a game where Garrett will chase his first sack in a Rams uniform and could get some help up front if Aaron Donald is back in the lineup.
