The San Francisco 49ers will once again turn to quarterback Mac Jones as they face the Arizona Cardinals today at Levi's Stadium. Starting QB Brock Purdy remains sidelined while recovering from the toe injury he suffered in Week 1.
However, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports that Purdy is progressing well and could be ready to return in time for the 49ers' Week 4 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
From @NFLGameDay Morning: The #49ers will start Mac Jones today, but Brock Purdy's return is coming; Plus, all these backup QBs are starting this week and no calls (yet) for Kirk Cousins. pic.twitter.com/KxaAfX3dbn— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 21, 2025
Purdy was a limited participant in practice throughout the week as San Francisco prepared for Arizona, and the team officially listed him as "questionable" heading into today's game. Still, the 49ers elevated Adrian Martinez from the practice squad to back up Jones, signaling that Purdy will not suit up against the Cardinals.
"As far as Purdy goes, he was limited all week in practice this week with that turf toe. That is progress," Rapoport reported. "My understanding: if this continues to go as it was, that he could be in line to start next week. It has been better than they anticipated."
Kickoff between the 49ers and Cardinals is set for 1:25 p.m. PT. Jones will be making his second straight start as San Francisco looks to stay undefeated this season.
When asked about his recovery, Purdy said, "It's been a day-to-day thing this week, and I feel like I'm happy with the progress that I've been making with my foot and toe."
