The Los Angeles Chargers were without Rashawn Slater all of last season after he sustained a torn patellar tendon in his left leg at training camp last year. With the club hopeful of his return to action this year, it appears Slater suffered an injury during Tuesday’s practice.
Reports indicate that the 27-year-old left tackle went to the medical tent, accompanied by a trainer, after playing 11-on-11, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic. The exact injury is unknown. However, it’s said that Slater did eventually leave the medical tent and remained out of team drills.
“Rashawn Slater just went to the medical tent with a trainer after first period of 11-on-11,” Popper reported… “Slater left the medical tent, went through some sets and is now watching individual work while holding his helmet… Slater was out of team drills. Trey Pipkins and Branson Taylor split reps at LT in front of Justin Herbert.”
The good news is that the soon-to-be five-year veteran stood on the side to watch the remainder of practice, per an image shared by an individual who attended the open practice. While he didn’t receive any more treatment after his trip to the medical tent, the Chargers will likely continue monitoring Slater before revealing his true status.

When healthy, Rashawn Slater is viewed as one of the most efficient left tackles in the NFL. However, injuries have cost him playing time on more than one occasion. He was limited to just three games in the 2022-23 campaign after suffering a ruptured biceps tendon. After two healthy years, he then missed the entirety of last season due to the left knee issue.
Based on Tuesday’s report, if Slater must miss time, it appears Trey Pipkins and Branson Taylor have a shot at some playing time at left tackle. Either way, look for L.A. to provide an update at some point soon.
