In a post on his Instagram this evening, veteran running back Myles Gaskin announced that he is retiring from the NFL. Over the past three years, Gaskin played minor roles with the Rams, Vikings, and Seahawks, but he saw the majority of his NFL production come in the four-year Dolphins stint that started his career.
As a three-star recruit out of O’Dea HS in Seattle, Gaskin chose to stay close to home when he committed to play football at Washington. He beat out both of the Huskies’ top returning rushers from 2014 for RB1 duties and became the school’s first ever true freshman to rush for over 1,000 yards. Gaskin showed incredible consistency over his four years in Seattle with rushing totals from freshman to senior year of 1,302 yards, 1,373 yards, 1,380 yards, and 1,268 yards. Gaskin’s 62 total touchdowns and 5,323 rushing yards are the most ever for a Husky and the second- and third-highest totals for those categories in Pac-12 history.
At the conclusion of his time at Washington, Gaskin was selected by the Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the final rusher to come off the board that year. In a year that saw the Dolphins barely manage to eclipse 1,000 yards rushing as a team, Gaskin got minimal usage as a rookie. While quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick led the team with 243 rushing yards and four touchdowns, Gaskin totaled 133 rushing yards and a touchdown on 36 carries as part of a stable of backs that included Mark Walton, Kenyan Drake, Patrick Laird, Kalen Ballage, Samaje Perine, and De’Lance Turner.
In 2020, Gaskin found himself as the team’s new leading rusher. Starting seven of 10 game appearances, he totaled 584 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 142 carries, adding 41 receptions for 388 yards and two more scores through the air. He repeated as the team’s leading rusher in 2021, playing in every game and making 10 starts. He topped his prior-year numbers with 612 yards on the ground with three touchdowns on 173 carries and 49 receptions with 234 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns.
In 2022, former 49ers duo Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson took over the room. After getting relegated to only four game appearances and only 10 carries for 26 yards, Gaskin failed to make the 53-man roster in 2023, leading to his contracts in Los Angeles, Minnesota, and Seattle to close out his career. In the text of his retirement post, he credits the Dolphins for the fun they provided him as an NFL running back and the Seahawks for allowing him to play his final NFL snaps in his home city, where he made a name for himself in high school and college.
