Recent Oklahoma Sooners recruiting trend signals a potential shift in Oklahoma's process that could help us identify their priorities moving forward

The Oklahoma Sooners had a slow start to their recruiting class of 2026 after hiring a new offensive coordinator and reorganizing their front office after the hire of Jim Nagy as general manager. 

However, they've caught fire over the summer, adding half a dozen commits since the middle of May, with more on the way. Their June 6th recruiting event was a major success and built a ton of momentum with several recruits feeling the love and sealing the deal on a few commitments (such as the recent Derrick Johnson commitment).

The Sooners have reorganized their priorities under the new front office and staff approach, and it's revealed an interesting new trend that could bring in some insight to their evaluation process.

What do all of these 2026 recruits have in common? They are all multi-sport athletes in high school, with a strong mix of basketball, track, and wrestling backgrounds scattered throughout. 

While this is an admittedly small sample size to go off of, it is an interesting trend we've seen play out so far. All but one of those commitments are players the new front office has recruited and prioritized in their 2026 class. 

This isn't to say that playing multiple sports is the end all be all for this staff. Four-star OL Deacon Schmitt is a high-priority target for Oklahoma, but he is a football-only player. 

This trend could be a small peek behind the curtain into how an NFL evaluation mindset that Nagy has brought to Oklahoma's front office. After all, several NFL teams covet players with former multi-sport backgrounds and it oftentimes could be a tiebreaker between two prospects.

Time will tell if this will hold up for Oklahoma's process, but it is something to take note of for their future under Nagy.
