The New Orleans Saints have a lot of tough decisions to make in the coming days. Following their Week 9 game against the Los Angeles Rams, their short-term focus may shift onto the NFL trade deadline. They'll only have a couple of days to formulate conversations to ship off some of their experienced talent in exchange for draft capital.
A couple of notable playmakers may be on the move at the deadline for New Orleans, but the team's bold request when it comes to what they would like in return right now may throw on the brakes.
The Saints have taken calls on both wide receiver Rashid Shaheed and Alontae Taylor, but it sounds like their asking price has scared off some other teams from pursuing a deal with New Orleans. According to Albert Breer, New Orleans has been seeking a day two pick in return for either playmaker.
"Rashid Shaheed, a burner who’s only 27 and in a contract year, has drawn calls ,too, but the asking price of a Day 2 pick has scared teams away to this point. Teams have reached out on CB Alontae Taylor, too, and those calls have reached a similar conclusion, with a similar price tag (Day 2 pick) proving a bit too rich for a guy on an expiring deal." -- Albert Breer
While this price does make sense, especially until the deadline is within a couple of days. The past few weeks have probably been busy for New Orleans, as teams check in, but this is the time where the rubber truly meets the road. Teams will feel more pressure to add talent to their roster, and both Taylor/Shaheed provides skill sets that can make a major impact for a team.
Although, in the case of Taylor, a day two pick is a pricey cost. Taylor's play has been inconsistent between this season and last, but his performances as a slot CB shine most often for the Saints defense. If a team wants him, that's the role they need to envision for him.
As for Shaheed, getting a pick worse than the 4th-rounder they traded away for Devaughn Vele would be an unfortunate outcome for the Saints. Vele hasn't played a ton, and Shaheed has proven himself to be a dynamic pass catcher and returner in recent seasons for the Saints. Shaheed is an expiring contract, while Vele is not, though.
We will see how it shakes out for the Saints, but it is easy to see a scenario where they are too aggressive with their hopes for a return for these two and ultimately, recent nothing, instead.
That simply cannot happen for Mickey Loomis and co. when you can see where this finish is going to end up for New Orleans.
