Kirk Cousins has mostly been a no-show thus far for Falcons' voluntary offseason workouts. But that's reportedly expected to change ahead of the team's minicamp.
As the veteran quarterback continues to figure out his future and whether or not it'll be in Atlanta, The Athletic's Dianna Russini reports that Cousins is likely to attend the Falcons upcoming stretch of mandatory activities in order to avoid fines.
Cousins felt undercut by the franchise after signing a four-year, $180 million contract last year only to watch the team select Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 draft and eventually bench him in Week 16 when his play had slipped.
The Falcons have maintained that Penix will be their starter going into the '25 season and that they're comfortable keeping Kirk on the roster as a backup. However, Cousins has made it pretty clear that he'd prefer to find an opportunity elsewhere.
"You want to see him go on to be the best version of himself," head coach Raheem Morris said of the 36-year-old QB a couple months back. "This is not a thing where we're holding you back. If the opportunity presents itself as something that's good for both of us – it's good for the Falcons and for Kirk Cousins – we'd certainly like to see that happen."
In a way it's understandable why the four-time Pro Bowler feels the way he does. Atlanta's move was a bit baffling at the time— and never really made a ton of sense financially.
But at the same time, Kirk was coming off an unfortunate Achilles tear and there were a lot of questions surrounding his ability to be a viable starter.
Maybe the Falcons were proven right with Cousins' play down the stretch. But it might be time to find fresh air elsewhere for the 13-year NFL vet.
