The Houston Texans are looking to take the AFC South crown again in 2025. CJ Stroud struggled to replicate his rookie season numbers thanks to subpar offensive line play and injuries to key players. Houston knows they have a limited time with Stroud on a rookie deal and are looking to load up on talent now. Reports indicate the team may be looking to upgrade its backfield and is interested in former Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb.

Report: Houston Texans Interested In Nick Chubb

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on SportsCenter Sunday that the Houston Texans may be looking to get a deal done soon with running back Nick Chubb. He is coming off a devastating knee injury, but has shown he can be one of the best backs in the league when healthy. Fowler mentioned that Chubb heading back to Cleveland isn’t off the table, but it is becoming increasingly unlikely.

“I was told that he’s hoping to sign here soon, and maybe he gets something done before a minicamp gets into a team. Four-time Pro Bowler. The return to Cleveland’s not totally off the table, from what I’m told, but probably unlikely because of their draft plans, they drafted multiple running backs. I’m told Houston could be one to watch here. They’ve been looking at that running back market, maybe adding somebody with Joe Mixon.”

It makes sense that the team would want to add some backfield depth. Outside of Mixon, they do not have much, and this is a team that does like to run the ball. With Cleveland drafting multiple running backs in the 2025 NFL Draft, it makes sense that Chubb would try to find another team. The Houston Texans would love to have the one-two punch of Mixon and Chubb in 2025.

2025 Outlook

The Houston Texans are the favorite in the AFC South heading into 2025. It helps when the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts have major question marks throughout the roster. Their biggest competition in the division is the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have a first-year head coach. The Texans are relying heavily on young wide receivers. Nico Collins is one of the most underrated receivers in the NFL, and the team traded for Christian Kirk. However, outside of those two, it is mostly young, unproven players.

Stroud will have to improve from last year and should if his offensive line can give him time. He spent most of last year running for his life in the backfield. The AFC is tough with the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, and Buffalo Bills all lurking once the playoffs begin. However, this team has plenty of talent, and adding another quality running back would be great for 2025.

Final Thoughts

It’s surprising that no team has taken a chance on Nick Chubb so far. Plenty of teams could use backfield depth in case of injury. However, teams are opting to take flyers on younger guys rather than veterans with an injury history. Can the Texans compete in a tough AFC this year?
