Last season's winner-take-all regular season finale between the 14-2 Vikings and 14-2 Lions may eventually lead to major shakeup to the NFL's playoff structure.
Comments made by Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown leading up the matchup about the unfairness of the loser having to go on the road in the postseason to play a division winner with a lesser record appear to have made it all the way to the commissioner's desk.
"It's crazy," the three-time Pro Bowler said at the time. "I think the rule should be changed. Obviously if you win the division, you should obviously make a playoff spot, but having a 14-win team having to go on the road is kind of crazy. But I guess I don’t make the rules."
According to Mike Florio of NBC's ProFootballTalk, those words led to Roger Goodell nudging Detroit to propose a change where playoff seeding would be based on record and not purely division championships.
"Per multiple sources, it became clear during last week's league meetings that Commissioner Roger Goodell wants to eliminate the guaranteed home game for teams that win their divisions," Florio reported.
"Goodell's preference became clear during the meeting regarding the proposal that was made by the Lions (at the prompting of executive V.P. of football operations Troy Vincent)," he continued. "One source in the room for the session said Goodell became visibly irritated at the resistance to the measure."
The goal in Goodell's eyes is to try to make the end of the NFL's regular season more interesting with no guarantee that a team will make the playoffs just because they won their division.
But it's still going to take support from the league's owners in order to make such a change and that very much remains to be seen.
