Russell Wilson Had 1 Main Reason For Signing With Giants

The New York Giants may not have represented the most attractive destination for a veteran quarterback following a 3-14 season, but Russell Wilson is excited about one new teammate.

After spending the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wilson signed a one-year deal with the Giants. The 36-year-old will likely open the season as Big Blue's starting quarterback over Jameis Winston and Jaxson Dart.

On Friday, Wilson attended a Fanatics Fest panel in New York City alongside Malik Nabers. Via Empire Sports Media's Anthony Rivardo, Mr. Unlimited identified the wide receiver as a huge motivator for joining the Giants.

"I came here because of him," Wilson said, gesturing to Nabers. "A big reason. I really wanted to play with a guy special like him."

Nabers proved a shining bright spot in an otherwise bleak 2024 season for the Giants. Last year's No. 6 pick began his NFL career by compiling 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns in a Pro Bowl campaign.

The former LSU star, who turns 22 in July, offers hope to an offense that's spent the past two seasons inside the bottom five of yards and points. However, Nabers isn't the only reason Wilson is optimistic about the Giants improving in 2025.

Wilson is also intrigued by a front seven that added No. 3 pick Abdul Carter alongside Pro Bowler defenders Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns.

"We've got a lot of guys who have put a lot of hard work into it," Wilson said. "We've got a really good defense, rushing the passer. We've got a lot of dudes. That's a good thing."

Last month, Wilson also cited head coach Brian Daboll's "brilliant mind" as a key selling point.

"I'm excited because his offensive wizardry is really special," Wilson said. "Him and [offensive coordinator Mike] Kafka, a guy who played quarterback in the league, just the rest of the staff, too ... People that I know and people that I believe in. I'm excited about the opportunity to play in this great organization."
