The New York Giants have signed yet another veteran quarterback, and the move could help answer one of the biggest questions of the NFL offseason.
Russell Wilson agreed to a one-year, $21M deal with the Giants on Tuesday. The 36-year-old joins Jameis Winston, who recently signed a two-year, $8M contract with New York.
Wilson's deal includes $10.5M guaranteed, which suggests the Giants view him as their starting quarterback heading into 2025. The commitment also all but certainly takes them out of the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes.
Rodgers reportedly had offers from both the Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers at the start of free agency. The 41-year-old met with the Steelers last week, and there is a growing sense that the two sides are getting close to an agreement.
The fact that the Giants decided to sign Wilson is a strong indication that Rodgers plans to join the Steelers. Otherwise, what options does the former NFL MVP have?
He could retire, but there is no reason to believe he is strongly considering that. Rodgers might also continue to hold out hope that a team like the Minnesota Vikings will sign him to mentor their young quarterback, but that seems unlikely to happen, too.
Wilson was clearly Plan B for the Giants all along. Now that they have given up on Plan A, common sense would tell you Rodgers is headed to Pittsburgh.
The Steelers have been the most logical fit for Rodgers all along. The Giants went 3-14 last year and do not appear to be a quarterback away from contention. Pittsburgh finished 10-7 and reached the postseason with Wilson. It's safe to assume Rodgers believes he can lead the Steelers further than Wilson did.
It would not be a surprise if Rodgers continues to take his time coming to a decision, as that is simply his style. But with the Giants no longer in the market for a starting quarterback, it seems like only one option remains for A-Rod.
