The New Orleans Saints look nearly finished filling out their defensive coaching staff.
New Orleans and new head coach Kellen Moore spent most of last week rounding out the offensive coaches. This past week, the Saints focused on the defensive side after the hiring of defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.
On Saturday, John Hendrix of Athlon Sports confirmed that New Orleans added defensive assistants Jay Rodgers and Robert Blanton. They'll join recently hired defensive coaches Bo Davis, Peter Sirmon, and Terry Joseph.
Somewhat surprisingly, only one of the new defensive assistants have prior ties with Brandon Staley. He'll be the subject of today's coaching profile.
A collegiate quarterback for the Indiana Hoosiers, Rodgers finished his college career in 1999 at Missouri State. Two years later, he got his coaching career started as a graduate assistant for the LSU Tigers, where he'd remain for two seasons.
After a year as a quarterback coach at Dodge City Community College in 2003, Rodgers returned to Missouri State as their QB coach in 2004, then moved on to the same role at Stephen F. Austin from 2005 through 2006.
In 2007, Rodgers was hired at Iowa State as their wide receivers coach. He'd remain in that spot for two years until he got his first NFL job. It was with the Denver Broncos in 2009, where he'd spend the next six seasons.
Rodgers began with the Broncos as a general assistant until being moved to defensive quality control coach in 2011. The following year, he was promoted to Denver's defensive line coach. It was a position he held from 2012 through the 2014 campaign.
In 2015, Rodgers landed with the Chicago Bears as their defensive line coach. Brandon Staley joined Rodgers on the Bears staff in 2017 as the outside linebacker coach. Staley departed Chicago after the 2018 season to join Denver's staff. Rodgers remained with the Bears until after the 2020 season.
Rodgers and Staley were reunited in 2021. Staley, as new head coach of the Chargers, hired Rodgers as the team's outside linebacker coach and defensive run game coordinator. In 2022, Rodgers would be moved to the defensive line coach of the Chargers.
Staley was fired by the Chargers midway through the 2023 campaign. After that season, Rodgers and the other assistants, including offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, were also let go.
Rodgers landed with the Atlanta Falcons as their defensive line coach this past season. Meanwhile, Staley went to the 49ers as a defensive assistant and Moore was the offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl LIX champion Philadelphia Eagles.
All three are now joined again in New Orleans. Joining them from that Chargers staff are Doug Nussmeier and Brendan Nugent. Rodgers, 48, has most of his coaching experience coaching the defensive line or outside linebackers in a 3-4 scheme that Brandon Staley is expected to run with the New Orleans Saints.
