Another Sunday, another game without Brock Purdy. The San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback was once again sidelined, this time watching from the bench as the team fell to the Texans. It marks the fourth straight game Purdy has missed with a nagging toe injury that just won’t seem to go away.
#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan on QB Brock Purdy's potential availability Sunday against the Giants:

So, the million-dollar question echoing through the Bay Area is: when is he coming back? Will Week 9 against the New York Giants be the triumphant return of the 49ers’ chosen one? If you ask Head Coach Kyle Shanahan, you’ll get a masterclass in coach-speak. When pressed about Purdy’s chances, Shanahan offered a glimmer of hope wrapped in a thick fog of uncertainty.
“I don’t think it’s a long shot,” he said, giving fans just enough rope to hang their hopes on. But he quickly reeled it back in, adding, “But I know he is doing better and we’ll see how he’s doing Wednesday.”
Ah, Wednesday. The magical day when all NFL mysteries are revealed. It’s the classic “wait and see” approach that drives fans and fantasy owners absolutely bonkers. Shanahan basically told us to check back later, like a customer service rep for a cable company.
Let’s be real, the 49ers are feeling Purdy’s absence. Mac Jones has been holding down the fort, and while he hasn’t been a complete disaster, he’s not exactly setting the world on fire either. In Sunday’s loss, Jones went 19-of-32 for 193 yards, tossing two touchdowns but also a costly interception. He’s currently listed as day-to-day with a bruised knee himself, because of course he is. It’s like the quarterback position for the 49ers is cursed.
The injury bug doesn’t stop there. Wide Receiver Ricky Pearsall is getting his knee checked out, and star wideout Brandon Aiyuk won’t even be back at practice this week. It’s starting to look like a MAS*H unit out there.
You can’t blame Shanahan for being cautious. Purdy is the franchise’s future. Rushing him back only to have him aggravate that pesky toe for a third time would be a catastrophic mistake. The team has made it clear: they don’t want him on the field unless he’s 100%.
So, while “not a long shot” sounds promising, it’s far from a guarantee. It feels like we’re stuck in a weekly cycle of hope and disappointment. For now, 49ers fans will have to do what they do best: hold their breath, cross their fingers, and wait for Wednesday.
