ESPN's Adam Schefter reinforced what the San Francisco 49ers have consistently maintained: the team has no intention of trading backup quarterback Mac Jones. Schefter shared on Sunday that the 49ers' plan remains to keep Jones on the roster for the 2026 NFL season.
"Despite continued speculation, the 49ers have no plans to trade QB Mac Jones this off-season and fully intend to bring him back to back up Brock Purdy, per sources," Schefter wrote.

That aligns with comments previously made by head coach Kyle Shanahan, who addressed Jones' future following the 49ers' playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks. While acknowledging that teams always listen to trade inquiries, Shanahan made it clear there are no current plans to move the veteran quarterback.
"As with any player on our team, including myself and [GM] John [Lynch], you always listen to people with trade offers, but we're also not into getting rid of good players," Shanahan said. "And so, I'd be very surprised if Mac wasn't around us next year."
Jones proved his value during the 2025 season when he stepped in for an injured Brock Purdy. The 27-year-old started eight games, posting a 5-3 record while helping keep the injury-plagued 49ers team in playoff contention. He finished the season with 2,151 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions, rejuvenating his NFL career.
On Saturday, The Athletic's Dianna Russini echoed the same sentiment.
"For teams looking to swing a deal for 49ers backup QB Mac Jones, I'm told San Francisco is not looking to part with the 2021 first-rounder," Russini wrote. "Things and offers can change, but the 49ers' preference is to keep their Brock Purdy-Jones tandem intact for 2026.
"Jones' 5-3 record as a starter amid the team's major injury struggles helped keep San Francisco afloat, and Kyle Shanahan loves what he has in the 27-year-old."
Unless a significant offer changes the equation, the 49ers appear committed to keeping Jones in place behind Purdy.
