Schottenheimer's Cowboys Not 'Burdened' By Super Bowl Drought

Some view the Dallas Cowboys' Super Bowl drought, which now spans nearly three decades, as a significant burden to bear.

But not for new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

In fact, he's relishing the opportunity in front of him.

“I don't think so,” Schottenheimer said when asked if the drought was a burden to him and his team. “I think it's to be celebrated, you've got an incredible organization, incredible team, but the history speaks to what we're about. Some people might view it as being burdensome, I don't, I think it's awesome.

"The more those guys are around, the more we see their Super Bowl rings. I think that's great for our guys because that's why we do it and we don't we don't hide from that."

Celebrated might be too strong a word, but there is a definite heavy cross to bear in some sections of Cowboys Nation with the franchise not getting close to even making a Super Bowl since the mid-90s.

Will that change under Schottenheimer? That's the hope.

However, it isn't something that is going to just happen. It takes time, and as Schotty says, it's a process.

“There's a process that goes into winning a world championship, you talk about the steps to help you get there, and we do that quite a bit," he added. "You have to win games at home, win games you're supposed to win, you have to get into the playoffs, and all those things. But I think it's meaningless to set an arbitrary goal about, hey, we want to win 10 games or we want to do this, we want to win a Super Bowl, and we don't hide from that.”

We are early on in Schottenheimer's process, and no one can say things aren't moving in the right direction. Yes, it's OTAs, everyone looks like a Pro Bowler right now, and the good vibes are flowing, but what Schotty is building here, culture-wise, is noticeable.

And perhaps more importantly, it doesn't seem like this new-look Cowboys team is paralyzed by the failures of previous years. That is an important mental note to make here.

Because, as we know, winning that mental game is often half the battle, and it's clear that Schottenheimer's Cowboys won't let previous failures stand in the way of what they're trying to achieve.

Which is a first Super Bowl triumph in nearly three decades.
