The Seattle Seahawks announced two roster moves early in the offseason.
Seattle missed the 2024 postseason despite going 10-7 in Mike Macdonald's first years as head coach. The organization has posted 12 winning records in the last 13 seasons, but the Seahawks haven't won a playoff game in six years.
On Friday, the Seahawks waived wide receiver Cornell Powell and cornerback Ryan "Bump" Cooper Jr. Each player had signed a reserve/future contract after ending the 2024 season on Seattle's practice squad.
Powell scored 10 touchdowns over five seasons at Clemson before the Kansas City Chiefs elected him with the No. 181 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. The 6-foot wideout played limited snaps in three games during the 2022 season.
A two-time national champion, Powell also won two Super Bowls as a member of the Chiefs. He spent the entire 2023 campaign on Kansas City's practice squad and started 2024 in the same spot before getting released in November.
Signed by Seattle a week later, Powell didn't see any playing time with the Seahawks.
Cooper registered four interceptions in two seasons at Oregon State before signing with the Baltimore Ravens last summer as an undrafted free agent. He played six snaps on special teams during a Week 8 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
His cousins, Nashon Wright and Rejzohn Wright, are also both NFL cornerbacks.
The Seahawks can build on a relatively successful 2024 that saw them improve from 30th to 14th in total defense. But they have some clear holes to address in the trenches this offseason.
Seattle finished 28th in rushing offense and tied the Houston Texans for the league's third-most sacks allowed (54). The defense also ceded 4.6 yards per carry.
Starting guard Laken Tomlinson, defensive tackles Jarren Reed and Johnathan Hankins, and cornerback Tre Brown are among Seattle's 10 unrestricted free agents. Even with a sizable boost to next year's salary cap, the Seahawks are still slated to begin the offseason in the red with less space than all but three other teams.
