Sam Darnold exited the Seahawks’ Week 1 game early and did not return. It remains unclear exactly how long Seattle’s No. 1 quarterback will be sidelined, but an update on the nature of his injury has emerged.

Initially described as having a hip ailment, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport clarifies Darnold actually suffered a glute injury. Initial testing revealed no major issues, and the Seahawks elected not to move the veteran passer to injured reserve. That means a return within the next four weeks is expected, and Rapoport confirms a lengthy absence is not expected in this case.

Reporting on Thursday indicated Darnold is expected to miss Week 2. Rapoport’s update states a return to the fold for Week 3 is indeed something to watch for. In the meantime, backup Drew Lock will guide the defending champions’ offense. Lock helped lead Seattle to a comeback victory in Week 1, and he is in position for at least one more contest in the lineup as things stand.

Darnold, 29, joined the Seahawks in free agency in 2025. The former No. 3 pick enjoyed a highly successful debut campaign in the Emerald City, and during the playoffs he avoided turnovers while Seattle’s defense powered the team to the Super Bowl. Darnold’s pact averages $33.5MM per season and runs through 2027, but another strong performance this year could lead to a notable raise.

Lock, meanwhile, is in his third overall season as a member of the Seahawks and the second year of his current stint. The former Bronco and Giant has made 28 regular-season starts in his career. That total is likely to increase next week, but Darnold’s pain management over the next several days will go a long way in determining the length of his absence.
