After their season came to an end without a playoff berth despite beating the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks brought back seven practice squad players to future/reserve contracts on Monday.
With practice squad contracts expiring at the conclusion of the season, the Seahawks re-signed outside linebacker Levi Bell, running back Bryant Koback, receiver Easop Winston Jr., receiver Cody White, tight end Tyler Mabry, defensive tackle Matt Gotel, and safety Jonathan Sutherland.
Headlining the group, Bell impressed throughout the preseason and training camp after signing as a free agent in late July. The former Texas State standout spent time in the USFL with the Michigan Panthers in the spring and after coming to Seattle, he produced nine tackles, a sack, and three quarterback hits in preseason play before being waived in final roster cuts.
Bell spent the entire 2023 season on the practice squad and didn't appear in any regular season games, but with a strong offseason, he could be in play to battle for a roster spot in a reserve role next August in training camp.
Mabry, the longest-tenured player of the group, has spent parts of the past four seasons with the Seahawks after signing as an undrafted free agent out of Maryland, appearing in eight games with one touchdown reception. The 27-year old tight end may have his best chance at carving out a roster spot next season with veterans Noah Fant and Colby Parkinson both scheduled to become unrestricted free agents in March.
At the receiver spot, Winston spent most of the season on Seattle's practice squad after catching six passes for 103 yards and a touchdown in the preseason. With DK Metcalf sidelined in Week 7, he dressed and played a handful of special teams snaps in a win over Arizona at Lumen Field. As for White, he had two stints on the practice squad and had been with the Seahawks since mid-November.
On defense, Gotel, a Tacoma native, turned in a fine preseason in the trenches for the Seahawks in August, racking up seven tackles and two tackles for loss. But his performance wasn't enough to make the team and he bounced on and off the practice squad, returning on January 1 and dressing for Sunday's finale without any snaps.
With Leonard Williams and Mario Edwards both slated to hit free agency and Bryan Mone's future up in the air after missing the whole season recovering from a torn ACL, Gotel may have a legitimate shot to compete for a roster spot at nose tackle in the spring.
In the secondary, Sutherland looked poised to earn a roster spot out of training camp as an undrafted rookie out of Penn State, only for a knee injury to lead to his release in final roster cuts. He eventually re-signed with the practice squad, but didn't appear in any regular season games even after Jamal Adams landed on injured reserve in December.
