Sean Payton is somehow making the Broncos worse

Last year, while enduring one of the "worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL," the Denver Broncos were 2-4 through six games. Enter Sean Payton, who was supposed to resurrect a franchise that hasn't been relevant since Peyton Manning was the quarterback.

Or so we thought.

Denver dropped to 1-5 on the season after losing 19-8 to the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night. Contrary to what was expected, the Broncos defense performed admirably, only allowing one touchdown to Kansas City's prolific offense. The offense, Payton's supposed strength, was an unmitigated disaster.

The Broncos didn't score until 6:07 remaining in the fourth. Quarterback Russell Wilson finished 13-of-22 for 95 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

As bad as Payton's offense was to watch, the $18-million-a-year coach made a move that even former head coach Nathaniel Hackett wasn't foolish enough to make.

Late in the second quarter following a Wilson sack on third down, Payton called a timeout, giving Kansas City an extra possession at the end of the half and allowing Andy Reid to save a timeout. In 14 seconds, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes marched Kansas City into field-goal range, and Harrison Butker nailed a 60-yard attempt.

Afterward, Payton took ownership of the miscue, acknowledging he lost track of what down it was.

His poor attention to detail late in the first half is inexcusable for a coach trying to instill a winning culture. It's also a terrible look for Payton after he blasted the former regime during the offseason, deriding it as "one of the worst" in league history.

If that's what the previous staff was, what would you call the job Payton's done? The Broncos haven't gotten any better under his watch — only drastically worse.
