Seattle Seahawks' Quiet Receiver Could Change Their Offense

The Seattle Seahawks may be counting on wide receiver Rashid Shaheed to be much more than the vertical weapon his reputation suggests. Locked On Seahawks co-host Rob Rang projected 60 to 70 catches, roughly 1,000 receiving yards, and six to eight touchdowns for Shaheed, arguing that an expanded route tree could make him a central piece of Seattle’s offense.

Shaheed generated positive reports during OTAs and minicamp for his connection with Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold, but he received comparatively little attention during training camp and the preseason. Rang said the reduced buzz should not obscure the receiver’s upside, pointing to Shaheed’s acceleration, fluidity, and potential use on screens, end-arounds, and other designed touches.

Rang’s larger argument is that Shaheed can win in areas of the field that do not fit the deep-threat label. He said Shaheed pushed back against the stereotype of track-background receivers who lack physicality, while host Dan Viens cited catches in traffic and on in-breaking routes during camp as plays that would give Seattle another intermediate option rather than limiting Shaheed to nine routes and space plays.

The stakes extend beyond Shaheed’s individual production. Seattle receivers Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp already give Darnold established targets, but Shaheed’s speed can change the way defenses allocate coverage and create room underneath. Rang said a productive season from Shaheed could make the offense more explosive even if the ball is distributed among several pass catchers.

Creativity could unlock Shaheed

New offensive coordinator Brian Fleury’s background also feeds the projection. Rang expects Fleury to incorporate creative receiver usage alongside a running game and tight end packages influenced by his time with the San Francisco 49ers. Shaheed’s ability to contribute on quick throws, motion plays, and deeper route concepts would make him a flexible fit in that approach.

Darnold’s willingness to work through his third and fourth reads during camp was another encouraging sign cited by Rang. If that carries into the season, Shaheed will not need to be the first option on every call to make a major impact. His opportunity may come from becoming the receiver defenses cannot treat as one-dimensional.
