The past few weeks have been nothing short of a whirlwind for the Cleveland Browns and rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The fifth-round pick made NFL history two weeks ago in a 31-29 loss to the Tennessee Titans, throwing for 364 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for a score.
It was a level of performance he was unable to sustain this past weekend, as the Browns were throttled by the Chicago Bears by a score of 31-3. The son of Deion Sanders completed just 18 of 35 passes (51%) for 177 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions, while being sacked five times. Although the Browns have shown Sanders some sense of belief by starting him down the stretch, a recent report revealed they may look elsewhere in the offseason.
As revealed by ESPN Cleveland's Tony Rizzo, the Browns are expected to select a quarterback in this year's draft.
"I'm hearing that the Browns are leaning towards taking a quarterback in the April draft," Rizzo said.
Sitting at 3-11, the Browns would have the No. 4 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft if it were held today. Ahead of them are two teams in the New York Giants (No. 1 pick) and the Tennessee Titans (No. 3 pick), who have rookie quarterbacks they will likely build around, which means the Browns would be able to land one of the better quarterbacks in the draft.
Both Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza of the Indiana Hoosiers and Dante Moore of the Oregon Ducks seem to be the consensus top signal-callers and could be the Browns' targets. Moore has eligibility remaining and says he hasn't made a decision about entering the draft.
In addition to Sanders, the Browns also drafted Dillon Gabriel in the third round of last year's draft, but following an injury and a string of poor showings, they benched him for Sanders. Needless to say, the Browns appear to not have any certainty at quarterback for the umpteenth year in a row.
Cleveland host the Buffalo Bills (10-4) at 1 p.m. ET Sunday on CBS.
