Shemar Stewart and Trey Hendrickson have yet to practice with one another, but the Cincinnati Bengals' first-round draft pick and All-Pro defensive end have found ways to work together regardless.
Hendrickson is still holding-in for a new contract. He's been attending practices for the last two weeks, and while he's just watching the work being done in street clothes, he's also been giving Stewart pointers and technique tips between reps.
With that comes a message.
“His biggest thing is that me and you are not the same,” Stewart said to FOX19's Charlie Goldsmith. “But if I can give you a little couple details to make your game better and you can flip it to where it works for you, at the end of the day you become a little bit better.
"One day, eventually, I’ll be like him.”
That's certainly the goal for Cincinnati. Hendrickson wants to be around for another few years, but Stewart is nearly a decade younger than him and is under contract control for the next five years on top of potential franchise tags. He's the next hope the club has for an elite DE while the one they have now continues through the back-half of his impressive career.
Stewart flashed in his preseason debut against the Philadelphia Eagles last week, recording a pressure and a tackle in 18 snaps. He's also starting to see snaps with the first-team defensive line in practices and could get some opportunities early in Monday night's exhibition against the Washington Commanders.
Hendrickson's return in the regular season would alter that a bit, but the work he's doing now with Stewart can lead to them both rushing the passer together when the real games begin.
