Should the Indianapolis Colts sign Jaire Alexander after the Green Bay Packers' decision to release the Pro Bowl corner?

The Indianapolis Colts roster still has a few obvious holes as they approach training camp. Depending on how young players perform in camp, their second outside starting corner job could end up being one of them.

A very appealing option to improve that spot just hit the market with the Green Bay Packers releasing Pro Bowl CB Jaire Alexander. Should the Colts look to sign the talented CB before training camp?

Is Jaire Alexander a good fit for the Colts' defense

Alexander's skill set at CB would be a great fit in Lou Anarumo's scheme. He is comfortable playing in zone and man coverage, and he would be able to face opposing teams' WR2s on a consistent basis with the current plan for Charvarius Ward to travel with top WRs this season. The Colts would have one of the best starting CB trios in the NFL in Ward, Alexander, and Kenny Moore II. They'd honestly have a real argument to be the best starting CB trio in the league. And they'd have multiple solid depth CBs behind them in Jaylon Jones, Juju Brents, Samuel Womack, and rookie Justin Walley. The Colts would turn one of their weakest position groups in 2024 into one of their strongest and deepest in just one offseason.

Is it realistic for the Colts to sign Jaire Alexander?

Now, to come back to earth a bit, the big question is how realistic a landing spot the Colts are for Alexander. The Colts still have a little over $20 million in cap space to use. So they have more than enough to enter negotiations and have a real shot. And that matters a lot in this case, due to Alexander not getting any of his projected contract for the season from the Packers due to not having any guaranteed money left on his deal. I expect him to get a solid contract on the free agency market, so the Colts would have to figure out if they think adding Alexander would improve their defense enough to warrant the hefty price tag he will covet.

The team would also love to see if any of their young CBs impress them in training camp before making this type of move. But with Alexander already being released by the Packers, they don't have the luxury to wait and see in this case. If they choose to wait and see how their young CBs perform, they will miss out on Alexander. I don't think either decision would be necessarily wrong by the Colts, but if they wait and see, one of their young CBs will need to step up and take the second outside starting CB spot by the horns, or they could have some major regrets when the regular season arrives. But if the Colts want to be involved, they have the ammo to do it. So I wouldn't say it's unrealistic at all for the Colts to be in the conversation as a team that could sign him.
