SI demonstrated oblivious QB-HC ranking of Jalen Hurts-Nick Sirianni combo

As the offseason comes to an end before training camp in about two months, rankings of where head coach-quarterback combos are coming in, and the Philadelphia Eagles have been seeing Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts rank high on those lists.

Last week, Sirianni and Hurts found themselves in third place in FanSided's ranking behind Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and quarterback Lamar Jackson, and the Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes. While there can be debate about that, it makes sense to have Sirianni and Hurts in the top five.

Not all media outlets feel the same way. In fact some might considered them to be on the outside of the top five.

Sirianni, Hurts face their doubters once again

Last year, Sports Illustrated had Sirianni and Hurts ranked 13th among quarterback-head coach combos. This year, SI writer Matt Verderame had the Eagles barely cracking the top 10 as they were tied with the Detroit Lions.

Sirianni was ranked 13th and Hurts was ranked ninth with a combined score of 22. Hurts' stats in 2024 held them back from getting a higher ranking, according to Verderame.

"The Super Bowl champs are loaded once more, and after extending Sirianni this offseason, Hurts and his coach are locked in for years. The Eagles got middling play from Hurts in 2024, who threw for just 2,903 yards and 18 touchdowns, although he ran for another 630 yards and 14 scores with the help of the tush push. With Hurts and Sirianni, the Eagles remain A-list contenders."

While Sirianni has a polarizing opinion about him, the numbers show that he is a much better coach than at 13 individually. He has gone 48-20 in the regular season and has never missed the postseason in four years as the Eagles' head coach. His 54 postseason wins are the second most for a new head coach in their first four years in NFL history.

Hurts also has a polarizing opinion like his head coach. Once again, he has a winning record as a starting quarterback with a 48-20 record and has scored 85 passing touchdowns and 55 rushing touchdowns in 77 career games. He's been a Pro Bowler twice and won Super Bowl MVP in February.

It's been puzzling to see the mainstream sports media refusing to give Hurts and Sirianni their flowers for the last four years. Running back Saquon Barkley gets all the love and the credit for what happened last year. The reality is while Barkley was a big factor, he ran for less than 60 yards in the Super Bowl and Hurts had to career the team in the Super Bowl to get past the Chiefs.

It appears it will have to be another year of Sirianni and Hurts winning to prove their worth even though they don't have to with Philadelphia.
