Slayton's Service: Giants Receiver Wins Major Award

Darius Slayton’s last memory with the New York Giants may be a good one.

The veteran receiver is on the cusp of free agency in March, but on Thursday, he spent the night in New Orleans at the Saenger Theatre, joined by Eli Manning, Malik Nabers, Victor Cruz, and many of the game’s best players.

Slayton won a major NFLPA award at the NFL Honors, accepting his victory for the Alan Page Community award.

The APC award is the union’s highest award, essentially its counterpart to the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year award. It’s bestowed upon a player who distinguished themselves with community service, something that Slayton has specialized in over the course of his six-year NFL career.

For his victory, the union will reward him with $100,000 to the Left Hand/Right Hand Foundation that Slayton champions.

“Winning this award means more than words can describe,” Slayton said in a statement. “The main goal for me and my family has always been to be able to give back to the people in our communities.

“It's not about the recognition, but I accept this award with grace and humility,” he added. “I hope it brings further light to the causes my family and I support. I am extremely grateful to be named the 2025 Alan Page Community Award Winner.”

According to the NFLPA, Slayton has donated over $150,000 to the foundation since being drafted in 2019. He also won the Week 16 NFLPA Community MVP award for the $50,000 he committed to underprivileged families in New York.

Slayton joins George Martin (1987) as the only Giants to win the prestigious award. He was also the team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, further emphasizing his efforts off the field. Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Arik Armstead was named the 2024 winner on Thursday.

With just weeks until free agency opens, it remains possible that Slayton has played his final game in New York. It seems that only one of Slayton or Jalin Hyatt will be on the roster in 2025, and with the opportunity other teams can offer in terms of quarterback play and postseason success, he’s likely to explore his options.

If he does leave, the Giants will be losing a consistent receiver and a respected veteran in the locker. The community, however, may feel the biggest loss.
