Steelers Make Eye-Opening Move Sending Pat Meyer To William And Mary Pro Day

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been working really hard to improve their offensive line. It’s no secret that Omar Khan, Mike Tomlin, and Assistant GM Andy Weidl know they want to strengthen this unit. They fully understand the importance of a dominant offensive line and acknowledge their lack of consistency in recent seasons. To address this, Khan and the Steelers have been aggressive in the draft, focusing on building a young core of talented players who can grow together.

In the 2024 season, rookies Zach Frazier and Mason McCormick showed real promise. These two have demonstrated the potential to be key contributors in the coming years, providing hope for a more solid line. Troy Fautanu was also expected to play a significant role in 2024, but his season-ending injury was a tough blow. While the jury is still out on Broderick Jones, many are optimistic that with a shift back to his natural position, he can improve and help solidify the line further.

The Steelers are still actively scouting offensive line prospects for the upcoming draft. On Thursday, it was revealed by Draft Diamonds that Steelers Offensive Line Coach Pat Meyer attended the William and Mary Pro Day to watch offensive lineman Charles Grant. This move signals that Pittsburgh remains committed to finding more talent for their offensive line and building the foundation for a stronger, more reliable unit in the future.

Obviously, just because the Steelers sent Meyer to the pro day doesn’t mean Pittsburgh has locked in plans to select Grant. However, Grant is an intriguing prospect, much like McCormick was in the 2024 draft. Coming from a smaller school has kept his draft stock lower, and the Steelers might see an opportunity to grab a potential steal in rounds three or four. Most mock drafts have Grant going in those rounds, but his stock could fluctuate as the draft draws closer.

Grant is an interesting player with a solid college resume. He was a three-year starter at left tackle, and the Steelers, with their young offensive line, are likely seeking to add depth to the position. With the uncertainty surrounding Jones and his expected move to left tackle, Grant could be seen as a reliable backup option to solidify the depth chart. A player like Grant could provide Pittsburgh with some flexibility and stability, making him a smart addition if the Steelers decide to pull the trigger.

In the long run, the Steelers are focused on building a strong, versatile offensive line. With a few more depth pieces, particularly a promising prospect like Grant, they could be in a good position moving forward. Having a young, rising player like Grant could prove to be a wise move, especially given the unknowns surrounding some of the current roster such as Jones.

Scouting Report: Steelers' Potential Draft Target Charles Grant

Bleacher Report NFL scout Brandon Thorn recently did an in-depth evaluation of Grant. Thorn sees Grant as a talented prospect with plenty of upside but acknowledges that he’s still a bit raw. His biggest concern is how Grant’s game will translate to the NFL, especially given the level of competition he faced in college. Evaluating small-school prospects can be tricky, and it often comes down to projecting how they’ll adapt against elite talent.

Despite those concerns, Thorn gave Grant a 7.0 grade, labeling him as a High-Level Backup with Potential Starter Upside and projecting him as a third-round pick. Grant looks like a sneaky offensive line prospect who could be on the Steelers' radar as they continue to build depth along their young offensive front.

As the draft approaches, Steelers fans will keep a close eye on where the coaching staff is traveling and which prospects are drawing the most attention. The Steelers have made a habit of finding value in the middle rounds, and Grant could be the latest name to watch.
