Steelers Reportedly Renewed Jonnu Smith Trade Conversations with Dolphins

The Pittsburg Steelers "renewed conversations today with Dolphin TE Jonnu Smith," according to Adam Schefter.

This storyline has gone back in forth in the last few days. Last week word came out that the Steelers were in communication with the Dolphins about a potential trade of Smith.

However, earlier today news broke that those conversations had been laid to rest. But, now Schefter has reported the conversations have been renewed.

The reason behind it all is Smith's contract. The Dolphins signed him ahead of the 2024 season on a two-year, $8.4 million contract.

Smith went on to catch 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. Following a stellar 2024 campaign, Smith and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, communicated with the Dolphins they'd like to restructure his contract.

However, that's where there's questions left to be answered. No one knows exactly what's been discussed between Smith, Rosenhaus and the Dolphins in the contract dispute.

One thing that has been confirmed, Smith wants to stay in Miami and Mike McDaniels wants Smith to be a Dolphin.

"Here's what I will say on behalf of my client: Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami. That's his first choice. This is where he lives in the offseason," Rosenhaus said, per The Miami Herald. "He had a record-breaking season last year. It was the best season ever for a Miami Dolphins tight end.

"He went to college at FUI. His dream team is the Dolphins. Hopefully, everything works out where he can stay in Miami."

When asked about Smith this morning, this was McDaniel's response.

"My hope, and I guess I haven't really considered anything other than I want Jonnu on the team. I think he wants to be here," McDaniel said.

Football is a business though, and it'll be up to the Dolphins front office and Rosenhaus to either come to a deal or agree on a trade destination. At this point, everything indicates the Steelers are the landing spot if Smith gets dealt.
