Steelers Sources Have Been 'Raving' About Rookie Drew Allar

Allar's throwing motion looks completely different after working with McCarthy and the videos that have come out of him at training camp have been impressive. Training camp is just practice, so it is nothing to read into too deeply quite yet. However, if he keeps improving he should be a legitimate candidate to start in 2027.

McCarthy and his staff worked with Allar throughout the spring on tearing down everything he had learned previously about playing the quarterback position. This includes his mechanics, which now look more fluid after going through McCarthy's quarterback school. He was always considered a raw prospect with all of the physical tools to be successful in the NFL, and he was compared to Josh Allen a ton throughout his time at Penn State. The end of his career at Penn State was rough as the program seemingly collapsed, and he ruined his draft stock. 

He was initially thought to be a first round pick, but he fell to the third round and some even thought that to be too high. The Steelers have a chance to develop him into the kind of player that can prove that talk to be wrong.

Steelers Are Searching For 2027 Starter

With Rodgers already set to retire after the 2026 season, the starting job for 2027 is open. Rudolph's contract expires after 2026, and the only two quarterbacks under contract for that season are Allar and Howard. Allar's roster spot is a lock for the 2026 season, while Howard's can be seen as in jeopardy. However, if they both make the 2026 roster, they will probably be competing throughout the 2027 season for the starting job. Another quarterback can come into the mix from the 2027 NFL Draft, but Allar seems to be impressing early on.
