Some arguably ridiculous speculation surfaced a few weeks ago surrounding how Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger appears somewhat overweight.
Despite the conjecture over Big Ben seemingly sporting a few extra pounds as he continues a rehabilitation program after undergoing season-ending elbow surgery last fall, Steelers teammate Cameron Heyward has no doubt Roethlisberger will be good to go once the NFL resumes normal operations.
The Steelers defensive captain made an appearance Thursday on "First Things First" on FS1, and he quickly dismissed any notion that Roethlisberger is out of shape.
"It's time for Big Ben's body to heal. You look at LeBron taking that time off, finally getting a chance to rest from the playoffs, I kind of look at it like that. I know he looks like he's been on 'Cast Away' but I'm excited to see where he's going to be at the end."—@CamHeyward pic.twitter.com/Yq8Rn1W26u— First Things First (@FTFonFS1) April 9, 2020
“I just think the beard makes your face way bigger,” Heyward observed, as transcribed by Steelers Depot. “I’ll be honest, like, I know I have a big head, so it doesn’t really matter, but I think for Ben, the beard’s gonna make you look bigger than you are. But I think he’s been doing a great job of staying in shape. I actually think he was doing a lot of cardio throughout the season just trying to make sure he didn’t falter off. So, I don’t think he’s going to be looking pudgy out there when we get out on the football field.”
As Heyward notes, much of the chatter surrounding how Big Ben looks “pudgy” stems entirely from the mountain man-level beard he’s currently sporting.
Roethlisberger recently said that people saying he looks fat “just blows my mind,” adding, “I guess it’s my beard that makes me look heavier. I must have five pounds in that, I know. But I’m not overweight.”
The general consensus within the Steelers organization is that not only will Roethlisberger, 38, return to full health, he will come back better than ever thanks to the elbow cleanup, fat rumors notwithstanding.
